09/14/07 Precis, Sacco's novel

Why did Sacco use a graphic novel to express himself instead of an article or photos? What tactics did he use to give us knowledge about Yugoslavia? The graphic novel allows for a connection a little more personal than either of the other two. Sacco focuses on 10 individuals, allowing the reader to understand the situation of the 10,000 others. The graphic aspect of the novel also add a comic level to the novel, which helps people continue reading. If the novel is too depressing, nobody will read it. (Though I consider this both a flaw and a blessing) Sacco could create his own image of people's faces using the graphic novel aspect. This allowed for his own interpretation of what they said, adding new meaning to their words. I also think he could have twisted their facial expressions for the worse, again changing the meaning of their words. Photos also couldn't portray the horrible stories that these people tell. The drawings, though an interpretation, give us a visual image of the horrors of the war.
